Social Skills
We often assume that social skills emerge naturally during development, but the fact is that many kids benefit form direct support to develop their "social smarts". Designed and facilitated by an occupational therapist and psychologist, our social skills groups teach positive social behaviours in a fun and supportive setting. Targeted skills include initiating and maintaining joint play, flexible problem-solving, body awareness, conversational skills, conflict management, and emotional control.
Children who would benefit from our social skills groups are those who appear to:
- Feel lonely or complain about being left out in social situations
- Have difficulty interpreting social cues (e.g. body language, tone of voice, personal space), or frequently misinterpret other's intentions
- Be shy, passive or fearful in situations with other children
- Are easily frustrated, overly competitive, or have frequent conflicts with other children
- React to new social situations in awkward or unpredictable ways
Our social skills groups are small in order to individualize teaching. We also group children together according to age and individual goals/needs.
We are presently forming groups for children between the ages 6 to 11 for the winter session.
- Sessions are held on Fridays at 4 pm.
- Start date in January 2012 to be determined.
- Fee: $450 for eight 60 minute sessions.
- Location: 658 Danforth Suite 412 (Pape & Danforth)
Our social skills programs are coordinated by Jody Levenbach PhD., a psychologist, and Stacy Kramer OT Reg. (Ont), occupational therapist. For more information on our social skills group please call Stacy at 647-236-4263 ext. 2.
